A freezer container is set, locked, and run at frozen temperature. Minus 18 by default, down to minus 25 if you need it. It is not a reefer running on the freezer side of its range, it is a unit configured for one job, holding product frozen for as long as the contract runs. AquaCat Containers rents freezer containers across South Africa, by the month or by the year.
We rent a lot of standard reefers on chiller duty, and a lot of reefers on freezer duty. Customers who only need frozen, who want a simpler operation and a lower power draw, take a dedicated freezer unit instead. The unit is mechanically the same family of equipment but it is set up and tested specifically for the frozen application.
Freezer container vs reefer container
The simplest way to put it: a reefer is a refrigerated container with a wide adjustable temperature range, typically minus 25 to plus 25 degrees Celsius. You set it to whatever your product needs. A freezer container is set up to hold one frozen temperature, locked, with operating habits tuned to that role.
Why does it matter? Three reasons. Power draw is more predictable when the unit is in steady-state frozen mode rather than swinging across a wide range. Door-opening discipline is tighter, the operating procedure is built around frozen storage, not a chiller-to-freezer flex. And operationally it is simpler, staff load and unload as a frozen store, full stop.
If you need flexibility, chill mode this month, freezer mode next month, take a reefer from our refrigerated container fleet. If you need pure-frozen, locked at temperature, take a freezer container. We will tell you which one fits your operation when you call.
Spec and operating range
Operating range is minus 25 to minus 18 degrees Celsius. Most freezer customers run at minus 20 or minus 22, comfortably below the SANS frozen-food threshold of minus 18 with enough headroom to absorb door-opening events without the product ever crossing the line.
Sizes are 6m, 10m, and 12m. The 6m is good for smaller butcheries, regional ice cream brands, and seafood operators with one product line. The 10m and 12m are the workhorses for larger holding stores, multi-line processors, and distribution buffer cold.
Power is single-phase 220V on the smaller units, three-phase on the larger ones. We size the cabling at quoting and verify the supply at delivery. All units are genset-ready, most customers run a hybrid of grid and generator with an automatic change-over.
Internal racking is optional. Some customers want the unit empty so they can drop their own pallet racking; others want a simple shelving build at hand-over. We do both.
Industries that take freezer containers
Butcheries and meat wholesalers use a dedicated freezer for primal cuts, mince, sausage stock and frozen pre-portioned product. The butchery cold storage page goes deeper.
Seafood operators rent freezer containers as the holding store after a blast freeze cycle. Catch comes off the boat, gets blasted in a blast freezer container, then transfers to the freezer container for the holding period before export.
Ice cream and frozen dessert producers take seasonal freezer container hire to absorb summer demand. Customers include regional dairies and larger brands stepping up volume for the November-to-March peak.
Frozen ready meals and bakeries with frozen dough. Holding cold for cooked-and-frozen lines, par-baked product, frozen pastry, and ice cream cake bases.
Retail distribution centres use freezer containers as buffer cold during stock pressure or DC refurbishment. Customers include large national retailers running short-term overflow.
Pharma and life sciences use freezer containers for vaccine and biological storage where SANS or GDP requires fixed frozen conditions. See the pharmaceutical cold storage page.
Why hire a freezer container instead of building a freezer room
Capital. A built freezer room is a sized capital project with refrigeration plant, insulated panels, sized power feed, refrigerant handling, and months of build time. A freezer container hire lands on site inside a week and runs on day one.
Reversibility. When the contract ends, the season finishes, or your operation moves, we pull the unit out and you have your yard back. No demolition. No stranded asset.
Risk. If your throughput grows, you take a bigger unit or add a second one. If it shrinks, you scale down. Built rooms do neither well.
Site readiness and delivery
A freezer container needs three things to land cleanly. A level concrete pad or compacted base sized for the unit. Power that matches the spec. Crane access for the lift. Our delivery team does a final access check by phone the day before, and we walk through site readiness on the call when we quote.
Standard delivery window is 5 to 7 working days from order confirmation, including the road haul and on-site commissioning. KZN deliveries can be faster, 48 hours is sometimes possible.
Pricing and terms
Freezer container rental is priced per month with discounts for longer terms. Pricing depends on size, term, region, and add-ons like generator hire, service contract level, and custom internal fitout. The container rental prices page covers indicative ranges and what affects the final number.
Send us the basics, what you are storing, how much, the term, and where the site is, and we come back with a quote, usually the same day.
FAQ
What is the difference between a freezer container and a reefer? A reefer is a refrigerated container with an adjustable temperature range, typically minus 25 to plus 25 degrees Celsius. A freezer container is set up to hold one frozen temperature, locked, with operating habits tuned to frozen storage. If you only need frozen and never chiller, the freezer container is simpler and the running profile is more predictable.
How cold does a freezer container go? Operating range is minus 25 to minus 18 degrees Celsius. Most customers run at minus 20 or minus 22, comfortably below the SANS frozen-food threshold.
Can I rent a freezer container short-term? Yes. Short-term hire for events, peak season, or one-off contracts is on the table alongside monthly rolling and longer-term arrangements. Send us the term you need and we will price it.
Do you deliver freezer containers nationwide? Yes. We dispatch from our Ballito yard and deliver across South Africa. Delivery times vary by region, KZN is typically the fastest, with the Western Cape, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo all on the regular delivery footprint.
Will a freezer container run on a generator? Yes. All units are genset-ready and many customers run a hybrid of grid and generator with an automatic change-over. We will spec the generator for the unit we are placing and walk you through the change-over arrangement.
