Mining Camp Cold Storage Containers

Off-grid reefers for mining camps, exploration sites and contractor catering. Genset-ready, nationwide delivery, no fixed contract.

Mining camps and exploration sites need cold storage in places the grid does not reach, and on timelines that do not suit a built cold room. AquaCat Containers supplies reefer containers to mining customers across South Africa, configured for off-grid operation, transported anywhere in the country, and pulled out again when the project finishes. We have worked with operators across the major mining regions, Northern Cape iron and manganese, Limpopo platinum, Mpumalanga coal, Gauteng gold, and the Free State.

The use case spans contractor catering at remote camps, vaccine and pharmaceutical cold for the on-site medical clinic, food cold for the mess hall, and short-term cold for special projects like commissioning, decommissioning or environmental sampling.

Mining regions we serve

Northern Cape, manganese and iron ore. Hotazel, Sishen, Kathu and the wider Kalahari mining footprint. Long delivery routes, hot ambient, dust, and almost always off-grid for the camps. We deliver reefers configured for harsh conditions and oversized genset operation.

Limpopo, platinum group metals. Mokopane, Burgersfort, Steelpoort, Rustenburg-adjacent operations. PGM mining camps with substantial contractor catering volumes, often running 24-hour shift catering.

Mpumalanga, coal. Witbank, Middelburg, Secunda, the Highveld coal corridor. Established mining operations with mature cold infrastructure, hired reefers typically going to expansion or contractor camps adjacent to the main operation.

Gauteng, gold and uranium tailings. West Rand, East Rand, Carletonville. Reefers for contractor camps and rehabilitation projects.

Free State, gold and diamonds. Welkom, Virginia, Kimberley adjacency. Mature operations with hired cold typically supporting commissioning or rehabilitation work.

Cross-border camps. Where Greg's customers run camps in Botswana, Namibia or Mozambique, we have delivered units across borders for SA-headquartered mining contractors. We disambiguate clearly: we deliver refrigerated containers, we are not a refrigerated trucking company.

Use cases at a mining camp

Mess-hall cold storage. Camp catering at scale needs significant cold capacity, frozen meat, fresh produce, dairy, beverages. A 12m reefer running the cold for a 200-person camp is a typical install. Bigger camps run multiple units.

On-site medical clinic. Vaccine cold, blood-product cold, pharmaceutical storage to GDP-aligned standards. Smaller 3m or 6m reefer with high-precision temperature control and audit-trail logging. The pharmaceutical cold storage page covers the spec.

Commissioning and decommissioning campaigns. Six-to-twelve-month projects with peak cold demand at specific phases. Hired cold matches the campaign timeline without the camp committing to a permanent build that becomes a stranded asset on project completion.

Environmental sampling and core storage. Some sampling and core programmes require chilled or frozen storage for samples awaiting laboratory dispatch. A small reefer at the sampling site holds samples at the right temperature until the lab pickup.

Contractor camps adjacent to operating mines. Specialist contractor mobilisation often happens faster than the mine's own infrastructure can scale, and hired cold fills the gap.

Off-grid and genset operation

Mining camps are routinely off-grid or on poor grid infrastructure. We size the generator with the unit and provide a configuration tested for sustained off-grid operation. Most mining customers run a hybrid, main genset during shift hours, smaller standby for off-shift cold maintenance, and we work with both.

Fuel logistics, on-site refuelling, and oil change schedules become part of the conversation when the camp is genuinely remote. We do not supply fuel, but we will spec the genset for the duty cycle and walk through the maintenance interval.

Dust and ambient temperature matter. Northern Cape and Limpopo summer ambient pushes well above the rated operating range of cheap units. Our reefer fleet runs Carrier and Thermo King refrigeration units rated for harsh conditions and we configure cooling and air-flow accordingly.

Nationwide delivery

We deliver from our Ballito yard across South Africa. Mining customers are typically the longest delivery runs in the fleet, Northern Cape can be a three-day haul, Limpopo two days, Gauteng overnight. We plan the route, the lift, and the on-site commissioning at quoting.

Site access for crane work matters at most camps. We do a final access check by phone the day before delivery and our delivery team will adjust the lift plan for tight or improvised yard layouts.

Why mining hires instead of building

Mining cold demand is project-shaped, it rises with mobilisation, holds for the operating phase, falls during ramp-down, and ends at decommissioning. A built cold room sized to peak demand is over-spec for most of the project life and becomes a stranded asset at the end. Reefer container hire matches the project shape, scale up, hold, scale down, end.

For shorter projects (six to twelve months) the case for hire is overwhelming. For longer projects (multi-year) the case is still strong because the operator can flex the fleet up or down as the project changes shape.

Contracts and terms

Mining customers usually run reefer hire on a six-to-twelve-month contract with extension options. Multi-year contracts are available where the project life justifies them. End-of-contract collection is built into the agreement and we plan it well ahead so it does not interrupt camp demobilisation.

Pricing depends on size, term, region, and the genset and service requirements. Northern Cape and remote-Limpopo deliveries carry higher logistics costs than KZN or Gauteng. The container rental prices page covers indicative ranges.

FAQ

Can your reefers run off-grid on a generator? Yes. All units are genset-ready and most mining-camp customers run on generator either fully or hybrid. We size the generator with the unit and provide a configuration tested for sustained off-grid operation.

Do you deliver to remote mining sites in the Northern Cape and Limpopo? Yes. Northern Cape and Limpopo mining customers are some of the longest delivery routes in the fleet but they are well-trodden. We have delivered to Hotazel, Sishen, Mokopane, Steelpoort and similar sites repeatedly.

How does cold storage work for the on-site medical clinic? A smaller 3m or 6m reefer with higher-precision temperature control and audit-trail logging. The pharmaceutical cold storage page covers the GDP-aligned configuration. We have placed clinic-grade units at remote camps for vaccine and blood-product cold.

Can you handle short-term commissioning or decommissioning campaigns? Yes. Six-to-twelve-month project hires are common in mining. We agree the start, the operating window, and the demobilisation date up front so the unit is on site when needed and pulled out cleanly at the end.

Do you deliver across the border into Botswana, Namibia or Mozambique? We have delivered units across borders for SA-headquartered mining contractors. We will be straight with you about what is realistic, cross-border logistics adds complexity and cost. Tell us where the camp is and we will tell you what we can deliver.
