South African seafood is a margin-thin, time-sensitive business. The catch lands and the clock starts. Hold temperature on the dock, freeze it fast at the processor, hold it cold while it consolidates for export, and stay inside the PPECB and MSC traceability requirements every step. AquaCat Containers supplies the cold storage at every point in that chain, at the harbour, at the processor, and at the export consolidation site.
We work with line fishing operations, seafood exporters, processors handling hake, calamari, pelagics, prawn, lobster and yellowfin, and the smaller operators who run a single boat and need cold for one campaign at a time. The seasonal nature of the catch matches the seasonal nature of reefer hire, capacity scales up when the season opens and pulls out when it closes.
Where we work in the SA seafood industry
Cape Town and the Western Cape ports. Cape Town harbour, Hout Bay, Mossel Bay, Hermanus, Saldanha. The Western Cape is the bulk of the SA seafood industry, pelagic operators, hake, calamari, abalone, yellowfin offshore, and a serious export consolidation footprint. We deliver reefers and blast freezers into all of them, with the Cape Town page covering the wider regional footprint.
Durban harbour and KZN coast. Durban port handles a different seafood mix, prawn, line fish, and the export-consolidation flow for inland processors. Our Durban page covers the harbour-side delivery footprint.
Eastern Cape ports. Port Elizabeth and East London handle line fishing and a smaller export footprint. The Port Elizabeth page goes deeper on Coega and the harbour cold stores.
Richards Bay. Bulk port with seafood adjacency. We service operators consolidating cold cargo for export through Richards Bay alongside the agri export flow.
Use cases for seafood cold storage
Dockside holding cold. Catch comes off the boat and needs to drop temperature before it moves to the processor. A 6m reefer at the harbour edge holds product at 0 to 4 degrees Celsius until the truck rolls. We have placed units at processor harbour-side facilities for exactly this.
Blast freezing at the processor. Yellowfin, calamari, prawn and lobster all benefit from a fast freeze the moment they are processed. Slow freeze ruins the texture and an MSC, SASSI or export customer can taste the difference. Our blast freezer hire page covers the spec, minus 40 to minus 25 operating range, ambient to minus 25 in roughly an hour.
Holding cold post-blast. After the blast freeze cycle, product transfers to a holding store at minus 18 to minus 22. A freezer container sits at the processor or the consolidation yard until the export shipment is ready to load.
Export consolidation. Multiple producers consolidating cold cargo for a single vessel sailing from Cape Town or Durban. Reefers at the port-side consolidation yard hold product at the right temperature until the container loading run.
Seasonal pressure absorption. The pelagic season hits, the catch volume triples for ten weeks, and the existing cold store overflows. A reefer or two at the back of the yard absorbs the surge without committing to a permanent build. This is one of the most common patterns in the seafood industry, the operation has the year-round baseline cold built in, and hires the surge capacity for the season.
Live-product staging. For lobster, abalone and live-product handlers, controlled-temperature staging between catch and processing is critical. Reefer cold provides the holding window without the ammonia plant overhead.
PPECB, MSC and traceability
South African seafood exports run through the PPECB cold-chain protocol and the MSC traceability framework. Both require temperature logging across the chain, audit-trail documentation, and units that hold setpoint reliably under load.
Our reefer fleet runs Carrier and Thermo King refrigeration units with on-board temperature logging. We can configure higher-frequency logging or external telemetry where customer audit requirements need it. The unit comes with a temperature certificate at hand-over and we keep the maintenance log on file for the duration of the rental.
PPECB-certifiable equipment specifically, talk to us about the unit you need and we will spec the right one. Not every reefer is PPECB-rated for export and we will be straight with you about which units in the fleet are.
MSC traceability is operator-side rather than equipment-side. Our role is to provide a unit that holds temperature reliably and gives you the logging records to show in an audit. The chain-of-custody documentation is on your operations team.
Spec for seafood cold storage
Reefer container, minus 25 to plus 25 degrees Celsius operating range. Sizes 3m, 6m, 8m, 10m, 12m. Best for chiller and freezer holding cold, not for fast-freeze.
Blast freezer container, minus 40 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. 6m and 12m sizes. Use for the freeze cycle, not the long-hold.
Freezer container, minus 25 to minus 18, locked frozen. For post-blast holding cold and export consolidation.
Genset-ready, three-phase or single-phase depending on size, with on-site commissioning included. Stainless interior on units configured for direct seafood contact.
Why hire instead of building harbour-side cold
Harbour-side land is constrained and a permanent build is rarely the right answer. Reefers and freezer containers land on a concrete pad inside a week, run on grid or genset, and clear off the pad when the season ends. The flexibility matches the seasonal nature of the catch and the volatility of the export contracts. Customers running multi-port operations move units between Cape Town, Durban and the Eastern Cape ports as the season demand shifts.
Permanent harbour-side cold infrastructure is also typically owned by the port authority or a major processor, and access is contested. Hired cold on the operator's own yard sidesteps the access negotiation entirely.
FAQ
Do you supply blast freezers for seafood operators? Yes. Blast freezer hire is one of our most-requested services for seafood. The blast freezer hire page covers the spec, minus 40 to minus 25 operating range, ambient to minus 25 in around an hour, sizes 6m and 12m.
Are your reefers PPECB-rated for export? Some units in the fleet are PPECB-certifiable. Tell us your export route and we will spec the right unit. Not every reefer in the fleet is PPECB-rated and we will not pretend otherwise.
Can you deliver harbour-side at Cape Town, Durban or Mossel Bay? Yes. We deliver harbour-side at all the major SA ports. Each port has its own access protocols and we coordinate gate clearance with your facility manager ahead of delivery.
How fast can you deliver during peak season? Standard window is 5 to 7 working days from order confirmation. During peak season we hold inventory closer to the active ports and same-day or 48-hour deliveries are sometimes possible. Tell us early when your peak season runs and we plan inventory for it.
What temperature logging do you provide? On-board logging is standard. Higher-frequency logging or external telemetry to your audit system is available where customer requirements need it. The unit comes with a temperature certificate at hand-over.
